Now that you have had the chance to research and read more about PIPA and SOPA I want you to share your ideas here.
Tell us exactly what you knew about PIPA before your research. Tell us how you thought your online life might change based on what you previously thought about PIPA.
Tell us exactly what you knew about SOPA before your research. Tell us how you thought your online life might change based on what you previously thought about SOPA.
After researching and reading about SOPA and PIPA tell us what the facts of the proposed bills are. Be as specific as you can about both SOPA and PIPA.
SOPA and PIPA were created to help deal with pirates of copyrighted content, but in a much stricter way. A way that might censor the Internet. Even though it may be targeted at foreign sites, its incredibly broad and vague language could mean that it has the ability to take down any sites that "facilitates" copyright infringement, which could mean anything.
ReplyDeleteI knew most of what SOPA and PIPA were about before reasearching. I knew their full names, that they dealt with copyright infringement, that the Internet was against it and media companies supported it, and that they could censor the Internet. I didn't know some of the specifics, though, like that they were created to deal foreign sites. My Internet life could change in that it wouldn't be a completely free Internet. Anything that even slightly infringes copyrights could be taken down. A lot of good ideas could be snuffed out because they used a copyrighted picture one their website, of the website that they were working for did.
Before I researched anything, I knew nothing about PIPA or SOPA. I didn’t really know how it would affect my life. I heard of Wikipedia being shut down, but when I heard off of Facebook, that some of the Senate were pulling their votes, I didn’t see the need to look into it. I didn’t think it would pass, and nothing would change.
ReplyDeleteThe facts of the proposed bills are, that it would just be making the Copyright law stronger, and give harsher punishments to breaking it. Like, if a website had a movie trailer on it, and the company producing the movie didn’t allow it, they could tell the White House, and then the website would be immediately terminated without any trial or representation. People were afraid of this happening to Youtube or Facebook. It would hurt alot of great ideas because they used a picture or video under Copyright, even though they gave full credit. SOPA and PIPA include foreign sites. That was the big thing about these new bills.
I didn’t know anything about PIPA before my research. I didn’t think that my life would change because I didn’t know that it even existed. I also didn’t know about SOPA. Now I know that PIPA is Protect IP Act. SOPA is the Stop Online Piracy Act. Both of these bills are supposed to strengthen the protection against copyright. If PIPA is passed, it will only take away websites with copyrighted material. If SOPA is passed, it will only monitor websites.
ReplyDeleteI actually had no idea what PIPA was before I researched. I thought the only bill being proposed was SOPA. Before I researched SOPA, I thought that the bill was likely to pass. I also thought it meant that all my favorite websites were going to be shut down. I didn’t know what I was going to do without Facebook, Youtube ect.
ReplyDeleteAfter researching, I found out PIPA is only targeting sites that their main purpose was selling or giving away media illegally. I learned PIPA was more likely to pass than SOPA was and that its purpose was to improve piracy laws. I learned that SOPA doesn’t necessarily mean that all the websites will be shut down. SOPA just wants to monitor the web and lower piracy rates. Plus, SOPA isn’t as likely to pass because most of the representatives and senate don’t agree with it.

ReplyDeleteImpression of SOPA and PIPA
I didn’t really know anything about PIPA before I researched it. I didn’t think my life would change because I didn’t know anything about it. I did hear about SOPA before I researched it. All I really heard was that it was a bill that might pass and it could shut down some of my favorite websites on the Internet. I thought that my life would change by not being able to research, listen to music, or do a lot of things on the Internet that I could before. Basically SOPA and PIPA want to take away all the sites on the Internet that have to do with copyright infringement. With SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act), the companies want to block the domain names of web sites that are capable of copyright infringement. SOPA would allow rights holders to cut off the source of funding of any potentially copyright infringing web site. PIPA is requiring the targeted sites to have no significant use beyond copyright infringement. PIPA is worried that the web site is a source of illegal content or not. Web sites all across the world have spoken out against SOPA and PIPA.

ReplyDeleteBefore I researched PIPA and SOPA, I knew absolutely nothing about them except the lies that were being posted all over Facebook and other social networking sites. Based off of what other people were saying, I thought that my life would be totally different. Our computer usage at school and at home would be limited. I thought that SOPA and PIPA would shut down Facebook, Twitter, Google, and many more of the websites that I use every day. I was angry that our government would pass such laws as these. After researching them, I learned that SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act) were both trying to stop foreign-based websites from selling pirated movies, music, and other things. SOPA would have the right to shut down an entire website if they were showing an illegal copy of a movie without permission. PIPA would give U.S. corporations and the government the right to look for legal action with any website enabling copyright infringement whether U.S. origin or not. Both bills are going to censor the Internet, but not in such a way as I thought before.
I had no clue what PIPA or SOPA was. I had no idea how it would effect my life.PIPA stands for protect IP act , SOPA stands for Stop Online Piracy Act. Both if passed will seek affirmative legal action with any website that is seen enabling copyright infringement. This would lead to sites being shut down and heavy law suits. It would also cause websites to have blackouts and advertising to be shut down.
ReplyDeleteSome of your favorite sites will/could be shut down. If you like a song you found on YouTube and you decide to sing it and then put your video on YouTube then you could be charged with copyright and then you could be sued to the fullest existent. What you can do about this is call your senators, stay informed, inform anyone you know and sign online petitions.

Before I researched about SOPA and PIPA I didn’t know anything about either of them. Because of this I didn’t really think my life would change because I didn’t know they existed. After I researched the two bills I found out what it would mean if they passed. If they pass then copyright infringements will be more difficult and it will have more consequences. I learned that SOPA is supposed to monitor websites. PIPA is supposed to take away the websites that have copyrighted material.
I knew absolutely nothing about SOPA and PIPA. I saw on facebook people wining about it, but I had no idea what it was. But when I did find out, I didn’t think it would affect me that much because I didn’t think it was going to pass. And I still don’t. Some facts about them both is that they’re meant to target sites that have copyright infringement and no other use for them. They target sites like google, facebook, and youtube. NEITHER of them will pass.
ReplyDeleteBefore I researched PIPA I had no idea what it was. If the bill was passed it would change my life on the internet a lot. If sites like google, youtube, and twitter were shut down I would have no reason to even use the internet.
ReplyDeleteBefore I reseached SOPA I had heard a little bit about it from media and people talking, but I never really knew what it was. If SOPA was passed the same sites like google, youtube, and twitter would be shut down and I would have no reason to use the internet.
SOPA and PIPA are bills created to prevent pirated movies, music, and products from being used illegally. The goal is to shut down all websites that are using pirated or copyrighted material. This can have a negative affect on the internet by shutting down top websites such as YouTube, Google, Wikipedia, and Social Networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter will also be at risk

Before I researched SOPA and PIPA, i had no idea what either of them were. i didnt think my life woyuld be affected by either since i already had never heard of them. After hearing about them, i still ont think it would really affect me since i hardly ever use the computer other than in this class. After researching, I found out Pipa is only targeting sites that their main purpose was selling or giving away media illegally.
I didn’t know anything about PIPA before my research. I didn’t know about SOPA or PIPA. I now know that PIPA is Protect IP Act and SOPA is the Stop Online Piracy Act. These bills are used for protecting the internet from piracy.
ReplyDeleteBefore I researched SOPA and PIPA I had no idea what they were. After I have researched both I now know what they are. SOPA and PIPA are designed to crack down on websites based offshore that peddle illegal content. Think pirated Hollywood blockbusters. No one disputes that that’s a worthy goal. The rub is whether it would give the government and copyright holders too much control over the Web. Here’s how it would work: If the Justice Department or a copyright holder believed a site was directing users to pirated content, they would go to court. Depending on who’s complaining, different remedies would come into play: In some instances a judge could order an Internet service provider like Verizon to cut off access to a site like Google. could be directed to delete links to an infringing site. The idea is to starve the offending sites of the web traffic that keeps them in business.

Before I did this research project, I didn’t know anything about SOPA or PIPA. I heard some people talking about it at school and seen the news on yahoo and msn, but didn’t know what it was all about. After my research, I realized that they were two bills that were being looked at in Congress. I found out that SOPA was the one that was receiving most of the gripe because people didn’t know about it. I have made my own opinion and I say that I am for both of the bills because I think that if we don’t have a safe Internet for all users than there really shouldn’t be an Internet at all. I researched that SOPA’s main purpose was to help out the entertainment industry. The United States government thinks that if we stop piracy then people will buy more movies and other media, but the entertainment industry doesn’t have as big of a part in our economy as the Internet as a whole. If SOPA were to pass the major thing that would happen is it would close off ties between sites in the U.S. and other rogue foreign sites that are exchanging pirated material for a profit. On the other hand, we have PIPA. PIPA is a very similar bill, but it is more likely to pass because it doesn’t change the Internet. All it will do is enhance the copyrighted material on the web and enforce it more. If will also allow the U.S. Department of Justice to act against the sites that continue to practice infringement or companies to sue other companies about the content of each other’s sites. I think that this bill would be a great addition to our system.

ReplyDeleteBefore I researched PIPA I had no clue what it was exactly. I did not think my life would change at all because I didn’t know anything about the bill. Although, I did hear lies about SOPA on some social networking sites saying that some of my favorite websites were going to be shut down. I thought my online life would be completely different without being able to connect with people on the internet and research freely. After researching SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act) I have learned that they are trying to protect against copyright violations and intellectual property theft. The SOPA bill would have the right to shut down websites that were showing any copied material without permission. The PIPA bill would give the U.S. government the power to look for any legal action with any website enabling copyright violations. Both bills will censor the internet, but they will not completely shut down some of my favorite websites like I thought they were going to.

ReplyDeleteI didn’t know about PIPA beforehand just now that I know what it is it seems like a waste of time and money. Even if you take away the internet people are still going to find ways for piracy. Making a bill about it won’t change the public’s view on it.
I think SOPA is just an excuse to keep people from looking at the real matters at hand. They’re drawing attention away from the elections this year and the detention bill. Again, I believe SOPA is a waste of time and money and people will find other ways for piracy.
The proposed bills are about deleting piracy on the internet. It allows copyright holders to sue people for using their property without their consent.
